HE SPOKE THROUGH THE PROPHETS

Zechariah, Elizabeth’s husband, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, regains his speech and pours out his Canticle of Praise to God. He praises the Messiah who was promised, and he prophesies the messianic role that his son, John, will play in salvation history.

“You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord, to prepare his way…”

The Advent readings are rich in beauty, hope and mystery. They are layered in

‘the fullness of time’. John the Baptist points to the Lamb - Christ the King - and proclaims: “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.”

John’s mission is to bear witness to the Light, to deny himself, take up his cross and proclaim Christ as the Way, the Truth and the Life of the world.

I used yellow poppies to denote friendship and sacrifice. John the Baptist, like so many of the prophets, gave up his life for the Truth. The wheat represents Johns depiction of the children of God as wheat that God will gather into his granary at

the end of the world. The wheat is also a foreshadowing of the Lamb giving

himself in the Eucharist.
